Appliance Maintenance Caerphilly

Checking your washing machine filter

Many issues with appliances are caused by lack of, or even no maintenance what so ever. In this section we will put a set by set guide on how to check and unblock your washing machine filter. By checking this regularly you will prevent blockages which can lead to bigger problems.

  1. Preping the appliance and area to prevent flooding.

First thing is to check that the washing machine is not full of water inside the drum. This should be clear with all the water pumped out. As long as this is the case place a towel down on the floor in front of the appliance.

  2. Remove lower plinth cover or door.

On most washing machines there is a decorative cover hiding the filter cap. This is the reason that most people do not check the filter as they simply do not know its there. The appliance will either have a plinth cover going the complete width of the appliance, a cover that clips over the filter cap or simply have a door that opens and closes in front of the filter cap. All these can be removed with a small flat head screwdriver placed in the small gaps on the covers and pushing down slightly.

  3. Unscrewing the filter cap.

Once the cover has been removed you will notice there is a plug type cap, this can be on either side of the machine (left or right). This cap will unscrew anti-clockwise, turn until it can be pulled out THERE WILL BE SOME WATER COMING OUT WHEN UNDOING, this is why the towel is placed down. Normally it is around a large cup full of water that comes out.

  4. Removing the filter.

After the filter has been unscrewed, pull it out completely and check both the filter and the housing that it sits in for any objects that may have come from clothing during the wash. After it has been check and cleared follow these steps in reverse to refit the filter and check for leaks, when the filter goes back in, it screws clockwise to tighten. Remember not to over tighten as it can cause the filter seals to fail. ALWAYS CHECK FOR LEAKS AFTERWARDS ON THE NEXT FEW WASHES. Tighten if necessary.
