Guide to checking your washing machine filter.

Introduction

Lack of regular maintanence is usually the cause for most appliance breakdowns. In this section we will put a step by step guide on how to check and unblock your washing machine filter. By checking this every few weeks can prevent blockages which lead to bigger problems.

  1. Preping the appliance and area to prevent flooding.

First thing is to check that the washing machine is not full of water inside the drum. The drum should be clear with no water inside it. As long as this is the case place a towel down on the floor in front of the appliance.

  2. Remove lower plinth cover or door.

On most washing machines there is a decorative cover or door hiding the filter cap. This is the reason that most people do not check the filter as they simply do not know its there.

The appliance will either have a plinth cover going the complete width of the appliance, a cover that clips over the filter cap or simply have a door that opens and closes in front of the filter cap. As an example, this washing machine has a plinth. To remove this all you in is a small flat head screwdriver. Prise the plinth off by putting the screwdriver where the plith meets the lower part of the front panel. Refer to your manual for the removal guide.

  3. Unscrewing the filter cap.

When you have removed the cover you will notice the filter cap. Note this cap can be on either the left or right handside of the appliance. The cap will unscrew anti-clockwise. Turn the filter cap until it can be pulled out. THERE WILL BE SOME WATER COMING OUT WHEN UNDOING. Normally it is around a large cup full of water that comes out.

  4. Removing the filter.

After the filter has been unscrewed, pull it out completely and check both the filter and the housing that it sits in for any objects that may have come from clothing during the wash. After it has been check and cleared follow these steps in reverse to refit the filter and check for leaks, when the filter goes back in, it screws clockwise to tighten. Remember not to over tighten as it can cause the filter seals to fail. ALWAYS CHECK FOR LEAKS AFTERWARDS ON THE NEXT FEW WASHES. Tighten if necessary.
